Excess Weight Leads To Disease

Reasons For Why Excess Weight Leads To Disease

There are many detriments of having excess weight. Weight loss is not important purely from an aesthetics point of view. There are many people who believe losing weight is not important unless you want to look like a movie star. While, losing weight does help you look fitter and healthier, it serves a greater purpose. Excess weight has the ability to cause numerous short and long-term health problems that could be avoided by losing weight. This is a big enough reason to start working on losing weight in order to prolong your quality of life for as long as you can. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons for excess weight leading to disease.

Excess Weight Is Too Much For The Body To Handle

excess weightThe body is simply not able to cope with all of the weight that is being accumulated on your frame. You have to make sure the weight is shed as soon as possible. The joints tend to face the brunt of the woes that are presented because of weight related problems.

The joints are not able to hold up the weight for long periods and this can weaken them to a point where you are not able to walk.

The immune system is also taxed because it is not able to get to all parts of the body and rectify the problems that are occurring. This increases the chances of getting sick.

Bad Eating Habits

This is one of those symptoms that come along with having extra weight. You start to crave more and more food because of this added weight and that leads to worsened eating habits.

You have to make sure you are eating properly at all times in order to avoid diseases. If you are continually eating poorly, this can become one of the major reasons for your excess weight becoming problematic in terms of health related issues.

Energy Issues

This is something that is seen on a day-to-day basis. Energy related issues transpire because of the excess weight and this directly leads to diseases forming.

The human body requires a certain level of activity on a regular basis in order to remain healthy and fit. if you are not able to get this exercise or movement in, you are putting the body at risk.

The body will start to feel more and more fatigued in a shorter span of time despite doing nothing. This will start to escalate as both the weight and time start moving ahead.

Poor Sleep

The last reason for extra weight leading to disease has to do with sleeping habits. If you are overweight, you will often have trouble sleeping and this does not always have to do with insomnia. You will simply have physical issues such as breathing problems that keep you from sleeping properly.

Make sure you are focused on losing weight to ensure you are able to sleep as required on a daily basis. The average human requires eight hours of sleep every day and those who are not hitting these requirements will get ill over time.

For those who are overweight, this problem becomes a graver reality as their body needs extra rest to recuperate from handling the excess weight.

These are some of the most important reasons for excess weight leading to health problems. You have to remain focused on losing weight in order to become healthier. There are many people who do not focus on their weight and end up complaining when they are hit with a series of diseases and related health problems. The chances of acquiring diseases that can be fatal increase the longer your body is not able to handle the excess weight. Can diet be an essential therapeutic strategy for cancer patients?

Learning From Nutrition and Diet Experts

Medscape recently spoke with two renowned diet, nutrition and food experts on the subject of nutrition and its effects on cancer patients.  Suzanne Dixon, MPH, MS, RD, is a dietician; author; speaker; and internationally recognized expert in chronic disease prevention, health, and cancer.  She commented on the Women’s Intervention Nutrition Study (WINS). “This is an important study because women with estrogen-receptor negative cancer have fewer treatment options.  The low-fat diet had a profound effect on recurrence in this group.”  Evidence is mounting toward the belief that diet can, in fact, prevent cancer and its recurrence involving breast cancer patients who were on curative therapy.

diet

A Plant Based Diet and Exercise

Additionally, in the Women’s Healthy Eating and Living (WHEL) study, an intense plant-based diet high in fruits and vegetables did not appear to improve survival, but when combined with a regular schedule of moderate exercise, it did reduce recurrence.  Dixon added that women with breast cancer often have a difficult time shedding excess weight, so even if you don’t buy into the effect your diet may have on the disease; it’s still a much healthier choice.  She points out that having cancer does not serve as a deterrent to other maladies such as heart disease, stroke, hypertension and other chronic diseases, so choosing a healthy diet is always the better path.

The second individual who spoke with Medscape on this subject is Rebecca Katz, MS, who is a chef, nutritionist, national speaker, and award-winning author.  Her books include: One Bite at a Time, The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen and The Longevity Kitchen.  In her book, The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen, Katz discusses foods that a patient and their family can prepare to help them surpass that feeling of helplessness.  She believes that too much emphasis is placed on what shouldn’t be done and chooses to shift that to a more positive message; sharing what is good to do through her healthy recipes.  In The Cancer-fighting Kitchen, Katz dedicates an entire chapter to an A-to-Z resource that details the evidence-based cancer-fighting properties of foods, herbs, and spices.  These are, of course, the foundation of the book’s recipes. The more these compounds are utilized and combined; the greater the chances of realizing their benefits.

Foods have many cancer-fighting properties, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and pro-immune system effects.  Along with regular exercise, maintaining a healthy attitude, and avoiding illness and infection, research indicates that diet does influence cancer progression, risk of recurrence, and survival.

Eating a Healthy Diet Assists You In Preventing and/or Healing From Cancer

So, whether you’re healthy and want to do all you can to continue on that path or you’re currently in the process of releasing cancer from your system (or that of a loved one) the evidence is quite compelling to lead you toward these healthier lifestyle choices.  The foods you put into your body are a major factor.  How could they not be?  You wouldn’t put a low octane gasoline in your Ferrari and expect it to run at its peak performance level for long.  Food is fuel.  It really matters.

Wishing you the happiest and healthiest New Year, -Dr. Sass

Fatalities and Illness From DMAA Supplement Warning!

DMAA Supplement Warning

I would like to issue a very serious DMAA supplement warning. I’ve received a very disturbing update on the dangers of DMAA, in the Monthly Prescribing Reference (MPR) read widely by physicians; like myself.

dmaa supplement warning

The Food and Drug Administration has reported that there have been 60 reports of illnesses and deaths associated with the weight loss supplement DMAA.

DMAA (dimethylamylamine) is also used in supplements used for muscle building and performance enhancements.

Reported cases include heart problems or psychiatric disorders. DMAA can also increase blood pressure and lead to a range of cardiovascular problems, shortness of breath and chest tightening. It also may be more dangerous when used in combination with caffeine.

DMAA Supplement Warning By The FDA

The FDA has warned companies that using DMAA in dietary supplements is illegal and is now trying to ensure that all DMAA-containing supplements are no longer distributed to consumers.

I urge you all to check your weight-loss supplements for DMAA and assure you that Smart for Life® does not use this, or any other drugs, in our products. Please check your labels carefully as DMAA is known by several other possible names, listed below:

• 1,3-DMAA
• 1,3-Dimethylamylamine
• 1,3-Dimethylpentylamine
• 2-Amino-4-methylhexane
• 2-Hexanamine
• 4-Methyl-2-hexanamine
• 4-Methyl-2-hexylamine
• 4-methyl- (9CI)
• Dimethylamylamine
• Geranamine
• Methylhexanamine

Weight Loss Drugs Wreak Havoc on Liver and Kidneys

Weight Loss Drugs Can Kill You

weight loss drugsIt’s recently come to my attention that a study at the University of Rhode Island, funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) found that Alli (the over-the-counter name) also known as Orlistat or the prescription brand name Xenical is a weight loss drug that can cause “severe toxicity”.  Orlistat, even in low doses, limits the function of key enzymes which are important in detoxifying the liver, kidneys, and the entire gastrointestinal tract which can result in severe toxicity of internal organs.

Continuing in this article, written by Dr. Dale Brown for the Maximized Living Health Center, Marathon Chiropractic, researchers reported that this drug causes cancer cells to multiply faster and that Orlistat also increases the anti-clotting effects of aspirin which raises the possibility of internal and external bleeding.

Other weight-loss stimulants speed up metabolism but can cause strokes, heart attacks and cardiovascular problems.  The list of dangerous drugs in this category are long: Meridia (heart attacks, strokes) Fen-phen (heart risk), Rimonabant (suicidal thoughts), Ephedra (heart attacks, strokes).

Weight Loss Drugs Have Massive Health Risk

Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Health Research Group has said that, “the possibility that the drug will only do the good things like lose weight and not have myriad effects on the body-is zero.”

Drugs are simply not the healthy answer to your weight loss concerns.  Significant changes in diet and life style are needed to make the transition to a healthy body weight and the preferred amount of activity that will truly make a difference toward a healthier you.

Stay away from weight loss drugs. Do your research, make your plan, and stick to it! Join our great health programs at SmartforLife® today for best results the HEALTHY way! -Dr. Sass

Link Shown Between Environmental Toxicants and Atherosclerosis

Environmental Toxicants 325WI recently read an article regarding environmental toxicants such as dioxins, PCBs, and pesticides, which can pose a risk to cardiovascular disease. For the first time a link has been demonstrated between atherosclerosis and levels of long lived organic environmental toxicants in the blood.  This study was carried out by researchers at Uppsala University and was published online in the prestigious journal, Environmental Health Perspectives.

I have often talked about the fact that cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes – are the most common cause of death in industrialized countries, and the most important underlying cause of these diseases is atherosclerosis.  I have also talked about unbalanced blood fats, diabetes, smoking, and high blood pressure as being high risk factors for atherosclerosis.

SmartforLife® Is Environmental Toxicants Free

I am pleased to report that Smart for Life uses only the finest all natural and 60% organic ingredients in our diet products with no preservatives. In an effort to eliminate all environmental toxicants, Smart for Life also uses triple filtered water.

Previous studies have also reported possible links between cardiovascular diseases and high levels of persistent (long-lived and hard-to degrade) organic environmental toxicants, such as dioxins, PCBs, and pesticides.

“In Sweden, and in many countries in the world, many of these substances are forbidden today, but since they are so long-lived they’re still out there in our environment. We ingest these environmental toxicants with the food we eat, and since they are stored in our bodies, the levels grow higher the older we get” says Monica Lind, Associate Professor in Environmental Medicine at Occupational and Environmental Medicine. -Dr. Sass

Eat the Tangerine Skin – Protect your heart!

You might think that tangerines are just a great treat but new research shows that they also have potent health effects for your heart. Researchers from The University of Western Ontario have discovered that a substance in tangerines not only helps to prevent obesity, but also protects against type 2 diabetes, and even atherosclerosis, the underlying cause of most heart attacks and strokes. According to the research published in the journal Diabetes, the secret ingredient is a flavonoid known as nobiletin.

Mandarin Oranges - Heart Health

To study the effects of nobiletin on metabolic syndrome in humans, researchers fed mice a “western” diet high in fats and simple sugars. One group of the mice became obese and showed all the signs associated with metabolic syndrome: elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, high blood levels of insulin and glucose, and a fatty liver. These metabolic abnormalities greatly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The second group of mice was fed the exact same diet but researchers added nobiletin. Those mice experienced no elevation in their levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin or glucose, and gained weight normally. In addition, the mice became much more sensitive to the effects of insulin.

According to the researchers, nobiletin was shown to prevent the buildup of fat in the liver by stimulating the expression of genes involved in burning excess fat, and inhibiting the genes responsible for manufacturing fat.

“The nobiletin-treated mice were basically protected from obesity,” Murray Huff, a vascular biology scientist at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, and the Director of the Vascular Biology Research Group at Robarts. “And in longer-term studies, nobiletin also protected these animals from atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque in arteries, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke. This study really paves the way for future studies to see if this is a suitable treatment for metabolic syndrome and related conditions in people.”

About Tangerines

Tangerines, also known as mandarin oranges, have unique health properties which distinguish them from other oranges or citrus fruit. One compound, tangeretin, is known for inhibiting the growth of leukemia. Both tangeretin and nobiletin have been found to fight breast cancer. Want to increase the nobiletin in your diet? Eat the tangerine but don’t forget the skin. The healthiest compounds in citrus fruit are in the rind and zest. Toss the minced rind or zest into marinades, salads and desserts.

I believe that eating a diet rich in flavonoids is key to good health. Eat your flavonoids and get started today with SmartforLife! -Dr. Sass

The Foods Keeping You From Weight Loss!

Foods Keeping You From Weight Loss

Foods keeping you from weight loss? As reported recently, potato chips and french fries, and generally any potato products, contribute to the biggest weight gain over time, according to a new Harvard study, which researchers say is the first to look at long-term weight gain pegged to specific foods.

Dr. Sass has known these facts to be true for some time and the study, conducted over 20 years and published in The New England Journal of Medicine, found that among more than 100,000 men and women whose weight was evaluated at four-year intervals, the average weight gain over each period was 3.35 pounds. This corresponded with an average weight gain just shy of 17 pounds over 20 years.

The researchers also tracked how much weight specific foods led people to gain over each four-year period.  Potato chips were the worst culprit, associated with a weight gain of 1.69 pounds, followed by potatoes in general at 1.28 pounds. (French fries were worse than boiled or mashed potatoes.) This, explained Dr. Dariush Mozzafarian, a professor of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health and the study’s lead author, could be because starches and refined carbohydrates produce bursts in blood glucose and insulin, increasing hunger and thus upping the total amount of food people eat at their next meal.

Non-Potato Foods Keeping You From Weight Loss:

There were plenty of non-potato culprits, too: Sugary beverages accounted for a one pound weight gain, while alcohol was linked with an average gain of 0.41 pounds over four years. Unprocessed meats accounted for a 0.95-pound uptick in weight, while processed meats were right behind at 0.93 pounds.

“Our findings indicate that small dietary and other lifestyle changes can together make a big difference, for bad or good,” Mozzafarian wrote in an email, adding, “For diet … eat fewer starches and refined foods like potatoes, white bread, low-fiber breakfast cereals, processed meats, sweets and soda.”

Instead, the study suggests, opt for healthier options if you want to lose weight.

“Common sense is very uncommon” Dr. Sass says and adds that “The age old adage of you are what you eat rings so true time and time again”.  People who added a daily serving of vegetables lost an average of 0.22 pounds over four years, the researchers found. People who added whole grains lost 0.37 pounds, and those who ate fruits shed almost half a pound. Nuts and yogurt also resulted in weight loss — all under one pound, but those losses can add up over time.

The authors point out that while these foods contain calories and fat as well, eating them usually causes people to avoid unhealthier, more calorie-dense options — “displacing” them, in a way — which ultimately leads to weight loss.

Also, because they have higher fiber content, they may be more satisfying.  “Satiety is a big thing,” said Jeannie Moloo, R.D., a national spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. “Consuming these foods [i.e. chips, sweet beverages and meat] could be less satiating and less filling, triggering hunger signals.” Moloo praised the study, saying it was important to have finally documented the advice that dietitians and medical practitioners have been giving for years.

Another example of this advice? The fact that being sedentary isn’t good for the waistline.  The study showed that changes in physical activity were related to long-term changes in weight, singling out TV watching as an example. Watching an hour of TV per day led to a 0.31 pound weight gain over each four year period — a finding the authors chocked up to people’s tendency to snack while they watch.

Sleep also plays a role: Participants who slept between six and eight hours a night were less likely to gain weight than those who got fewer than six hours or more than eight.

“Be active,” Mozzafarian said, “turn off the TV, and get enough sleep.”

Dr. Sass couldn’t agree more with this article and lists the foods associated with the most pounds gained and the least pounds gained over a four-year period.

  • Potatoes account for 1.28 pounds gained over a four-year period, with French fries being worse than mashed or boiled potatoes.
  • Sugary beverages account for 1 pound gained over a four-year period.
  • Unprocessed meat accounts for 0.95 pounds gained over a four-year period.
  • Processed meat accounts for 0.93 pounds gained over a four-year period.
  • Alcohol accounts for 0.41 pounds gained over a four-year period.
  • Yogurt accounts for 0.82 pounds lost over a four-year period.
  • Nuts account for 0.57 pounds lost over a four-year period.
  • Fruit accounts for 0.49 pounds lost over a four-year period.
  • Whole grains account for 0.37 pounds lost over a four-year period.
  • Vegetables account for 0.22 pounds lost over a four-year period.
