GMOs Make Our Food Better…. Right?

By Sasson Moulavi - October 24, 2014

nonGMO

What are GMOs? GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. GMOs are created by manipulating genes within plants and animals and mixing them to create more “efficient” food. One good example of this is corn. Before GMOs were introduced into our foods, about 35+ years ago, a stalk of corn would produce  3-6 ears of corn. Now with gene modification, a single stalk of corn can produce 3x as many. Now you may be saying, that sounds very beneficial considering our growth in population, right? Some may argue that GMOs only improve our food, and on the surface this appears to be true. However GMOs start losing their validity, when huge manufacturers are warping genes to increase their production and ultimately their sales. This floods the market with genetically altered foods, and the consumer has no idea what they’re actually putting into their body. The most shocking part about it……. manufacturers do not have to label their product as genetically modified! With all of the public support surrounding science and technology, it can become difficult to see who is helping the public and who is cashing in on our ignorance. We have to remember that GMOs started because a tobacco farmer wanted to create a more resistant tobacco leaf in order to increase his profit margins. We cannot let “Big Food” cash in on more profitable crops without knowing what we put into our bodies. Drink Water For Weight Loss Help

The Importance of Water For Weight Loss

triple-filtered water-weight lossDrinking water does not scream out as being one of the best weight loss options out there, but it technically is. Any weight loss program that is not built on the foundations of drinking water will not lead to quality results. If you want to lose weight, it is important to at least drink eight glasses of water a day. This is the bare minimum for those who want to start shedding all of that excess weight as soon as possible. Let’s take a look at the importance of water and why it is of utmost importance when it comes to losing weight fast and efficiently.

Water Clears Toxins

The number one reason for drinking water when losing weight has to do with the clearing of toxins that are present inside. The body will start to accumulate bad toxins over time and these can decide to reside inside the body for long periods.

Water is the only solution to make sure they are flushed out in a healthy manner as soon as possible. The water will be able to make sure those toxins are a thing of the past.

If those toxins remain inside, they will wreak havoc not only on your health, but your desire to lose weight as well.

Water Helps Digestive System

If you are going to lose weight, the digestive system is going to be the star of the show. If you are able to get the digestive system on your side, you will get results.

The digestive system can become overwhelmed when changes are being made and water has to be its fuel. It is just like a car and gasoline. Water has to be consumed in order to keep the digestive system revving as it is supposed to at all times.

Water Fills You Up

This is one of those benefits that is often overlooked until you are going through with the process. You will start to notice that water fills you up which means you won’t feel hungry throughout the day and start craving food.

This is great for those who are trying to cut down on how much they are consuming on a regular basis. It is easy to start losing weight when you are drinking water because of how fast it can fill you up.

When you are filled up, you won’t look to start going off track in order to fulfill your needs.

Replaces Bad Beverages

This is similar to feel ‘full’ and has to do with not wanting to drink other beverages that would otherwise have been included with the meal.

It is best to drink water with all of your meals in order to see results. The reason for water being great is that it will flush down the food and make sure you don’t drink other beverages (i.e sodas) along with the meal.

It is a true ‘win-win’ situation for the body as it is able to flush down the food that has been consumed while getting a drink in too.

These are just some of the reasons for water being an incredible influence on losing weight fast. There are many people out there who are unaware of the benefits of water and simply start to starve themselves. If water is not being consumed throughout the day, It will become near impossible for the body to get the most out of your weight loss routine whatever it may be. You have to make sure the water that is being consumed is being done on a regular basis to get the most out of your daily routine.

Obesity Can Lead To Diabetes

Reasons For Obesity Leading To Diabetes

serious disease - diabetesMany diagnosed with diabetes are listed as being ‘overweight’ or ‘obese’, but is there a correlation between the two realities or is it a simple coincidence? There are some people who believe diabetes and obesity are not interlinked, but research studies have shown these two to have a deeper connection. Let’s take a look at why obesity tends to lead to diabetes for patients.

Individual Cells Stressed

Diabetes occurs at the micro level as the body is unable to produce insulin that is required to sustain homeostasis (i.e. internal balance). When the insulin is not being made on a consistent basis, the body will start to become frail and weaken.

This is a general case of obesity, but what happens when the individual is overweight. The chances of recovering for diabetes tends to falter because the individual cells are being routinely stressed.

As you are eating more and more, the cells and their receptors start sending signals to the rest of the body. The signals are saying ‘it is time to shut things down so we can process the excess nutrients’ and this means insulin cannot be pumped in.

As the stress on the individual cells start to accumulate more and more, it will lead to severe diabetes in the individual. The cells will start to shut down and the issue worsens.

Production of Resistin

The body is designed to handle nutrients and proteins in a certain manner. There are limits in place that make sure the body does not overdo things which causes imbalance internally.

Over time, the body will start to develop resistin if there is excess weight in place. This is to help the body save energy and focus on handling the excess weight that is present.

What does resistin do for the patient? It will disable the insulin from getting to the cells at a normal level. This reduced access to the cell makes it impossible for the body to remain healthy.

As weight is shed, the body is able to get rid of the resistin that has developed and make sure everything returns back to normal.

Sugar Remains in Bloodstream

sugary drinks - diabetesDiabetes requires the sugar inside to be circulated in a manner that is healthy for the body in the short and long-term.

When the body starts to shut off at the cellular level, the sugar will begin to remain inside the bloodstream. Not only will this lead to diabetes, it will lead to a sustained growth in weight which worsens the issue.

To refresh the body and make sure the insulin is going where it is supposed to, the patient has to lose weight as soon as possible and start heading in the right direction.

PEDF

This is a protein that is released into the body that can become the catalyst for the individual becoming a diabetic.

What does PEDF have to do with diabetes? Generally, this protein is going to come in contact with the liver and/or muscles which results in them becoming desensitized to insulin. They will simply not read the emergence of new insulin that is coming in and that causes issues and results in diabetes.

The more the insulin is resisted, the pancreas will try to overcompensate and produce more. This will result in the insulin stopping as a whole internally.

These are four of the most important reasons for diabetics generally being obese. Being overweight can lead to a number of issues as the body is taxed to hold the excess weight in place. Diabetes is one of those issues that becomes more and more apparent as time goes on.

Excess Weight Leads To Disease

Reasons For Why Excess Weight Leads To Disease

There are many detriments of having excess weight. Weight loss is not important purely from an aesthetics point of view. There are many people who believe losing weight is not important unless you want to look like a movie star. While, losing weight does help you look fitter and healthier, it serves a greater purpose. Excess weight has the ability to cause numerous short and long-term health problems that could be avoided by losing weight. This is a big enough reason to start working on losing weight in order to prolong your quality of life for as long as you can. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons for excess weight leading to disease.

Excess Weight Is Too Much For The Body To Handle

excess weightThe body is simply not able to cope with all of the weight that is being accumulated on your frame. You have to make sure the weight is shed as soon as possible. The joints tend to face the brunt of the woes that are presented because of weight related problems.

The joints are not able to hold up the weight for long periods and this can weaken them to a point where you are not able to walk.

The immune system is also taxed because it is not able to get to all parts of the body and rectify the problems that are occurring. This increases the chances of getting sick.

Bad Eating Habits

This is one of those symptoms that come along with having extra weight. You start to crave more and more food because of this added weight and that leads to worsened eating habits.

You have to make sure you are eating properly at all times in order to avoid diseases. If you are continually eating poorly, this can become one of the major reasons for your excess weight becoming problematic in terms of health related issues.

Energy Issues

This is something that is seen on a day-to-day basis. Energy related issues transpire because of the excess weight and this directly leads to diseases forming.

The human body requires a certain level of activity on a regular basis in order to remain healthy and fit. if you are not able to get this exercise or movement in, you are putting the body at risk.

The body will start to feel more and more fatigued in a shorter span of time despite doing nothing. This will start to escalate as both the weight and time start moving ahead.

Poor Sleep

The last reason for extra weight leading to disease has to do with sleeping habits. If you are overweight, you will often have trouble sleeping and this does not always have to do with insomnia. You will simply have physical issues such as breathing problems that keep you from sleeping properly.

Make sure you are focused on losing weight to ensure you are able to sleep as required on a daily basis. The average human requires eight hours of sleep every day and those who are not hitting these requirements will get ill over time.

For those who are overweight, this problem becomes a graver reality as their body needs extra rest to recuperate from handling the excess weight.

These are some of the most important reasons for excess weight leading to health problems. You have to remain focused on losing weight in order to become healthier. There are many people who do not focus on their weight and end up complaining when they are hit with a series of diseases and related health problems. The chances of acquiring diseases that can be fatal increase the longer your body is not able to handle the excess weight. If You Aren’t Feeding Your Kids Healthy, Whole Foods, Is Anyone?

It’s Time To Eat More Healthy, Whole Foods

I recently watched an amazingly eye-opening video, featuring Jamie Oliver and his Food Revolution on healthy, whole foods.  Jamie’s a 34 year old, average citizen and chef from Essex, England, who has a not-so-average take on where we need to focus our attention, immediately.  Jamie’s message is simple and to the point: Teach our children about food.  It’s an all-out assault on our ignorance of food.  Our kids are going to live a shorter life span than us, by about ten years, if we don’t teach them how to shop for, prepare and eat real food.  The processed food and fast food that is the bulk of so many diets today is literally killing us.  Diet-related diseases are the biggest killers in the U.S. and two-thirds of our population is obese.  Those of us who are older are probably better off since these dangerous “pseudo foods” weren’t around or as prevalent when we were growing up, but think of the youth of today.  If we aren’t cooking in our homes, where are our kids going to learn about real food?  Jamie visited an elementary school classroom and showed them various fresh vegetables in their “whole state”.  Cauliflower, potato, beet, tomato, eggplant; the children could not identify any of them.

Healthy, Whole Foods Should Be The Standard In Daily Eating

healthy, whole foods kidsJamie’s been working on this revolution for seven years and believes the United States, as a leader, needs to take the wheel so the rest of the world will follow.  That’s why he came here and began in West Virginia, where obesity and related fatalities are so high.  He talked with families, teaching them how to teach others.  He has made himself available to the lunch ladies, convinced that the limited budgets can be creatively adjusted to provide healthy meals to the school-aged children.  Jamie is calling out for all of us to make the change for our own families and then spread the word, the recipes, and the information on healthy, whole foods that will change the health of our society, in general.

Being on the leading edge of change isn’t usually a comfortable place to be…but it’s the only place to be if you really want to make a difference.  Stepping out from the crowd is the way it’s always been done.  More so than ever before; it’s time to step up!

Jamie Oliver is one of a small army of concerned individuals who are carving out their own perfect way to make a difference.  As he so aptly points out in this video, if those of us who have valuable pieces of information to contribute, each get involved on a small grass roots level, the change will happen quickly.  As we share information with a few, who share with a few, the knowledge travels easily and effortlessly, like the ripples in a pond; reaching an ever-widening circle as we move forward as a healthier town, nation and world.

Do yourself, your family and your friends a favor by watching and sharing this video post.

A cola and a smile? Not so fast….Diabetes Kills

Sodas And Lots Of Daily Sugar Can Cause Diabetes

In an on-line article by Kate Kelland (Reuters) I read of a very disturbing study done on the consumption of sugary drinks and Diabetes.  You know the ones to which I’m referring; Coke, Pepsi, and any of the other brands of soft drinks in that category.  Those of us who drink these on a regular basis consider these 12 ounce wonders to be a true friend.  They give us a boost of energy and refresh us with their effervescence.  Well, don’t be fooled.  These are the bad guys hiding behind clever commercials, fun packaging and a burst of ice-cold bubbles.

diabetes

Hold onto your hat for this statistic.  Drinking just one of these sugar-rich beverages a day can increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 22%!  This study was done throughout eight European countries, utilizing information from 350,000 individuals.  They questioned these people about their diet, including the number of sugary and artificially sweetened soft drinks and juices they consumed each day.  The research team at Imperial College London was headed up by Dora Romaguera.  She has great concerns about the fact that Europeans have increased their consumption of these sugar-laden drinks and wants to get the information out to the public.  It’s also interesting to note that, according to this study, fruit juice consumption was not linked to diabetes incidence.  Actually, Smart for Life® believes that in the weight loss phase, no fruit or fruit juice should be consumed.

Type-2 Diabetes Is A Long Term Condition

The research that’s been done in the United States shows alarmingly similar results.  Several studies have linked the consumption of these beverages to being overweight and developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes.  Type 2 diabetes is a long-term condition characterized by insulin resistance and affects more than 310 million people, worldwide.

Patrick Wolfe, a statistics expert from University College London, who was not involved in the research, said the message is quite clear.  “The bottom line is that sugary soft drinks are not good for you – they have no nutritional value and there is evidence that drinking them every day can increase your relative risk for type 2 diabetes.” Wolfe was quoted to say.

So, there it is.  It’s time to steer away from what I call “dumb” calories.  For those of us who need to kick the habit, believe me, I know it’s tough.  We drink our 8-10 glasses of water a day and feel great about it, but really look forward to that occasional sweetness.  Personally, I’ve turned my diet cola habit into a Smart for Life® water enhancer habit.  I’m not saying it’s easy, but between the Peach Mango and Acai Pomegranate, I’m able to satisfy that craving and reap the benefits of this natural appetite suppressant supplement.   A few squirts in my water bottle, and I get great flavor along with an energy boost from the Vitamin B6 & B12.  But honestly, the biggest benefit is feeling the relief from knowing I’m no longer ingesting the colas.  Whether we’re trying to eliminate the sugar or the artificial sweeteners, we know it intellectually, but we have to line it up on a deeper level to be successful when we go to change these types of habits.  It feels like we’re saying goodbye to a dear friend; but believe me, some relationships just run their course.  This is one that’s best seen through your rear view mirror as you move on down the road to your healthier lifestyle.

To a Diabetes-free life, your health and happiness, -Dr. Sass

Obesity Rivals Smoking as Major Health Risk

Obesity – Major Health Risk

obesity - major health riskRecently, I came across a report published in the American Journal of Medicine. It reports that obesity is becoming a major health risk and global epidemic that is comparable to cigarette smoking in its level of hazardous effect.  He notes that obesity is the leading avoidable cause of type 2 diabetes in the U.S. which is on the rise, globally, as well.  Hennekens has published these findings with co-author Felicia Andreotti, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine at Catholic University in Rome, Italy.

“I am deeply concerned that the United States is the fattest society in the world and likely to be the fattest in the history of the world.” said Hennekens.  “Unfortunately, most people prefer prescription of pills to proscription of harmful lifestyles.  I am, however, optimistic that weight loss of 5 percent or more combined with a brisk walk for 20 or more minutes daily will significantly reduce cardiovascular and total deaths.”

Hennekens continues to explain that this generation of adolescents are more obese and less physically active than their parents and are already showing higher rates of type 2 diabetes thus under a major health risk.  The current generation of children and adolescents in the U.S. are likely to be the first since 1960 to have higher mortality rates than their parents.

As this type of report hits home with all of us; now, more than ever before, we need to be teaching our children (and re-training ourselves) to be our own best advocates of a healthy diet and more active lifestyle.  It may seem like a huge task, but every positive change you embrace is an investment in your future, and theirs. -Dr. Sass

Unforeseen Updates on Weight Loss Research

Weight Loss Research On Obesity

For decades, we’ve been doing weight loss research to find solutions to obesity and we are still a considerable distance from knowing what works best.

I just read that a paper was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, examining long-held advice about weight control.  The authors concluded that some of this advice is not supported by science.

Previously, small changes in behavior were considered to be able to produce great change, over time.  Since these long-term plans don’t factor in that as you lose weight, you require a reduction in calories to maintain your new, smaller size, it was surmised that small changes really can’t be expected to have the effect once promised.

Weight-Loss-Research-Infographic

It was believed that losing a large amount of weight quickly would not be as effective as a slower, gradual loss.  The authors cited research suggesting that there’s really no significant difference between the fast vs. slow approach.

It was once considered important to set moderate, realistic goals to avoid the frustration of failure.  On the contrary, they cited examples where bigger goals reaped bigger results.

What can we take away from this?

Nutrition science is ever-evolving.  Make it your priority to rely on the latest research and tailor your findings to best serve your unique circumstances.
