Cold Weather and Appetite

Cold weather and appetite effects can go hand-in-hand. Hibernating animals tend to store fat before winter by increasing enzymes that increase fat storage (lipoprotein lipase).  In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, this was clearly shown to occur in humans as well.  Humans increased fat storage enzymatic activity just like bears, for example.1

Corisol, a well know fat storing appetite increasing hormone, increases in winter and drops in summer.  You can easily accumulate up to 10 pounds if corisol levels increase by 30%.2

SAD (seasonal affective disorder), a well known winter phenomena that affects many people, affects serotonin levels which control food intake.  People who suffer from SAD have an almost compulsive attraction to carbohydrates.  They are also often isolated at home eating more with less activity.  When I worked in Canada some of my SAD patients would gain 30 pounds over the winter and only lose about 10 pounds over the summer.  In 10 years, that is a 200 pound weight gain.3

Leptin Effects With The Cold Weather And Appetite

Leptin, a well known body weight regulator, has been clearly shown to drop when women were exposed to cold.4   When leptin levels drop, your body thinks you are starving and you eat more.

It has been clearly shown that people who swim in cold water get much hungrier than people who swim in warmer waters.5

In the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it was clearly shown that people gained about 1 to 2 pounds per winter and ate an additional 86 calories per day.This might not sound like much but in a 6 month winter, that’s over 15,000 calories or about 4.5 pounds.  Over 10 years that adds up to 45 pounds.  So guess what?  Most people gain their weight over the winter months.

Beside the holidays, which I call the danger zone between Halloween and New Year’s, there are many biological reasons that people gain weight.

Sugary Drinks Linked to Diabetes

Consumption of at least 1 sugary drinks per day is significantly associated with the development of diabetes, according to a report by Vasanti S. Malik, ScD and his colleagues with the Harvard School of Public Heath, as reported in Diabetes Care.

Sugar-sweetened beverages were defined as soft drinks, fruit drinks, sports drinks, energy and vitamin water, sweetened iced tea, punch, cordials, squashes and lemonade.  Not included were 100% fruit juices without added sweeteners.

Dr. Malik notes that although consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks has been associated with weight gain, their role in the development of diabetes has not been reviewed.  According to Dr. Malik and the researchers, the high content of rapidly absorbable carbohydrates in sugar-sweetened drinks may increase risk of diabetes not only through obesity, but also by increasing glycemic load, leading to insulin resistance and inflammation.

One single extra sugary drink has about 200 calories.  That is equivalent to a 20 pound weight gain per year.

Poll Shows Obesity Top Threat to Children’s Health

obesityA new poll shows that adults consider obesity the number one threat to children’s health in the United States and many believe the problem is getting worse.

Almost 40% of the adults polled cited obesity as the biggest threat to youngsters and teenagers, followed by drug abuse, smoking, Internet safety and stress.

Dr. Matthews M. David, director of the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll says, “If we’d done this poll four years ago, obesity would not have been at the top of the list.”

Obesity rates among children and teens in the U.S. have skyrocketed in the last 30 years.  A 2008 study by the Centers for Disease Control showed nearly 1 in 5 children aged 6 to 11 and 18% of 12 to 19 years olds were obese.

The top 10 overall health concerns for U.S. children in 2010 and the percentage of adults who rate each as a “big problem” include:

1.  Childhood obesity – 38%
2.  Drug abuse – 30%
3.  Smoking – 29%

7.  Teen pregnancy – 23%

Study: Most Obese Moms, and Their Kids, Underestimate Their Weight

They underestimate their weight…With obesity and weight issues affecting nearly 2/3 of adults and 1/3 of children in the U.S., it seems to be changing our perception of what’s considered heavy.

Those who are carrying unhealthy extra pounds are more likely to see their weight as normal, and are therefore unlikely to feel the need to drop some of those pounds.

The latest indication for this was presented recently at an American Heart Association conference.  Columbia University researchers reported the preliminary results of a study that found that overweight mothers and children tend to underestimate their own – and each other’s – weight.

“A lot of their misperception has to do with the fact that overweight and obesity is becoming the norm,” says the lead author of the study, Nicole E. Dumas, M.D., an internal medicine resident at Columbia University Medical Center, in New York.

The study included 222 mostly Latino mothers and children who were recruited at a children’s health clinic in an urban setting.  The research team interviewed the participants about their medical history and social background and also measured their height, weight and BMI (body mass index).

Almost 2/3 of the mothers were overweight or obese.  Nearly 40% of the children, who ranged in age from 7 to 13, were also overweight or obese.  The vast majority of the overweight people weighed more than they thought they did — and the heavier they were, the more likely they were to underestimate their weight.

82% of the obese women underestimated their weight, compared with 43% of overweight and 13% of normal-weight women.  Likewise, 86% of overweight or obese children failed to correctly estimate their weight, compared with just 15% of normal-weight children.

“There was a trend that showed that as women became more and more overweight, and then obese, the larger the misperception of true body weight was,” says Dumas. “Unfortunately, we found this was the case with the children as well.”

The participants’ misperceptions were not limited to how they viewed themselves.  Almost ½ of the mothers who had an overweight child believed their child’s weight to be normal.  And even though more than 80% of the women were overweight, only 41% of the children thought their moms needed to lose weight. So you see it was very easy for them to underestimate their weight.

Brain Shrinking, Overeating and Weight Loss

Overeating and Weight LossIn an overeating and weight loss study done at the UCLA Laboratory of Neuro Imaging, Department of Neurology,  (LONI) has shown that people with body mass index (BMI) in the obese range have a shrinking of brain size in older age of about 8%.  People who are just overweight have a 4% decrease in size later in life.

Although these changes are measured later in life, the changes begin in midlife.  This association was also seen with people who had type 2 diabetes.  It is important to note that it has been reported that overweight people have a higher frequency of cognitive pathology later in life.

Overeating and Weight Loss Comparisons

I urge all of you who are overweight and obese to realize what your habits are doing to your brain.  I am also worried that we will see a similar affect in our obese children but at much younger ages, possibly a shrinking of 10% by the age of 45 if the child was obese starting at age 10, for example.

This study, which has been largely ignored by the media, was well done and very relevant, in my opinion, but the media would rather talk about the latest celebrity scandal.  I urge the media to talk about this study and sensitize the public to this very important fact.

I have had many clients tell me they feel depressed and less sharp when they are having overeating and weight loss  struggles.  Remarkably many patients tell me they  “think “ better when they lose weight and eat healthier.

Another Reason To Keep Your Kids Away From Soda

keep your kids away from sodaYou’ve heard me talk about it before but there is yet again another study that shows how bad soda is for your kids and that you need to keep your kids away from soda.

Besides adding to childhood obesity, a new study in the Journal of Pediatrics shows 75% of children aged 5 to 12 consume caffeine and it may be keeping them up at one night.  And what is the primary source of their caffeine?  You guessed it – soda.  And the more caffeine the children had, the less they slept.

“I would suggest that parents simply be prudent and regulate the amount of caffeine their children consume,” says study author William J. Warzak, PhD, a professor of psychology in the department of pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical in Omaha. “They will not be the worse for wear if their caffeine consumption is restricted,” he says. The caffeine in the children’s diet came mainly from soft drinks.

So what is a moderate amount of caffeine in a 5-year-old or 10-year-old? “I don’t think we know the answer to that question,” he says.

“Most of the research into the health effects of caffeine has been with adults [and] there really is very little pertaining to children,” he says. “The FDA has not established recommended amounts of caffeine consumption in children, although the Canadian government has issued such guidelines and our respondents indicated that quite a few children push those limits.”

Avram Traum, MD, a pediatric nephrologist at MassGeneral Hospital for Children in Boston, tells WebMD.com that the amount of caffeine children consumed in this and other studies is “shocking, staggering, and disturbing.”

Other Reasons To Keep Your Kids Away From Soda:

The new study looked at how caffeine may affect sleep and bed-wetting, but drinking so much soda may also have an effect on obesity and diseases associated with obesity, including high blood pressure in children, he says.

“There is no reason that school-aged children need caffeine. Period,” he says. The occasional cup of soda on a special occasion is OK, but children should not drink caffeine on a daily basis.

“Sodas are junk food and have no nutritional value,” says Charles Shubin, MD, director of pediatrics at Mercy FamilyCare, a division of Family Health Centers of Baltimore.

Ihuoma U. Eneli, MD, medical director of the Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, is surprised at the amount of caffeine that children in the new study took in.

Pesticides and Allergens May Be A Factor in ADHD

Pesticides UseA few weeks ago I wrote about a study that linked pesticides to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and I went on to explain the benefits of organic foods that are pesticide free.

New research is showing again that pesticides and allergens may be one of the factors affecting ADHD.  In a study published in the journal Pediatrics, researchers studied 1,139 children ages 8 to 15.  All the children studied had measurable residue of pesticides commonly used on fruits and vegetables.   According to the National Academy of Sciences, diet is a major source of pesticide exposure in children, and most of this exposure comes from the common kid-friendly fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, strawberries and celery.

In the Pediatrics study, they found that for every tenfold increase in the urinary concentration of pesticide residue, there was a 35% increase in the chance that the child would develop ADHD.  The effect was seen even in children who had a very low level of detectable, above-average pesticide residue.

When Eating , Pesticide Exposure Is Constant

Because certain pesticides leave the body after three to six days, the presence of residue shows that exposure is likely constant.  The study found that children with the kind of metabolites left in the body after malathion exposure were 55% more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD.

As I mentioned previously, additional research is required to confirm these findings but again, one of take-home messages for parents is to give their children as much organic food as they can and always remember to wash fresh fruits and vegetables, organic or not, thoroughly. junkie and chunkyA new study by researcher Paul Kenny of the Scripps Research Institute has found that those fatty foods you enjoy so much may be as addictive as cocaine and heroin.

The scientists allowed lab rats to stuff themselves round-the-clock on foods such as bacon, sausage and sweet treats and found that it caused addiction-like responses in their brains similar to the reaction rats addicted to cocaine and heroin exhibited in previous studies. These responses can lead to bad eating habits and you getting chunky.

They suspect these same chemical changes that occurred in the rats when they were overeating may also occur in humans.  Paul Kenney explains, “People know intuitively that there’s more to [overeating] than just willpower.  There’s a system in the brain that’s been turned on or over-activated and that’s driving it at some subconscious level.”
