Q:What makes the Smart for Life™ Program work? A:Our philosophy is very simple: Eat, Feel and Be Smart for Life. It is the difference between a do-it-yourself diet and a physician supervised weight loss clinic. Smart for Life™ empowers you with the healthy habits necessary to feel and look better every day. Our programs are science-based and offer safe, rapid, easy weight loss without hunger. We offer one-on-one medically supervised programs with physicians, and medically trained professionals who create a personal weight loss program to meet your lifestyle needs. Many of the questions and concerns are addressed in the questions and answers below. But if you need further explanation, feel free to contact the Clinic nearest you. [Location Link] [ Close ] Q:Why won’t I be hungry on the Smart for Life™ plan? A:Hunger occurs when blood sugar and insulin fall. The bigger the fall, the greater the hunger. When you eat three big meals a day, your blood sugar spikes after each one and your body stores fat. Then when your blood sugar eventually falls, you get hungry again. Result: you are never in the fat burning zone very long. By instead eating seven perfectly balanced meals throughout the day, you will stay in the fat burning zone continuously. Our Smart foods help you keep your blood sugar balanced, so you are less likely to feel hungry and more likely to burn fat. [ Close ] Q:What is BMI and why is it important? A:Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height. It provides a reliable indicator for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems. Since BMI is governed by this weight to height ratio, every body type has a different ideal BMI. An average BMI is between 19 and 24. This easy-to-use chart can help you determine your BMI. [Our Doctors Link] [ Close ] Q:How are metabolic problems addressed on the Smart for Life™ program? A:One out of four of the people we see are unable to lose weight because of an undiagnosed metabolic problem. People with slow metabolism often waste time and money on other diets. They never diagnose the thyroid problem or insulin resistance that so often causes slow metabolism. Smart for Life™ physicians identify these problems in approximately 25% of our patients. These problems are then treated at the Smart for Life™ Centers and the clients go on to easily lose weight. To save time and money, when prescribed, medications can be dispensed by our Clinics, thus eliminating the need for an inconvenient trip to the pharmacy. Like our vitamins and supplements, most medications are included in our basic fees. [ Close ] Q:What are the Smart Cookie squares and how do they work? A:The Smart Cookie square features a blend of proprietary protein, fiber and amino acids which are naturally filling and hunger-suppressing. The one-on-one medical supervision allows the physician to have available the widest array of treatments possible to assist the client as they make a lifestyle change for healthy, long-term weight loss. The program has been developed to be successful with convenience and ease. Smart for Life™ Weight Loss Centers do not advocate calorie counting, contracts, toting large food packages or dieting. Instead, we promote behavioral and lifestyle changes that help you lose weight quickly and safely. You will not just diet and become dependent on the Cookie square but be reprogrammed to manage your healthy weight with all kinds of foods – for life. [ Close ] Q:How fast can one lose weight on the Smart for Life™ Weight Loss Centers? A:A compliant client can expect to lose between 12-15 pounds every four weeks. However, results vary from person to person. Don’t be surprised if you lose more! [ Close ] Q:How do your clients maintain their weight loss? A:We have a unique philosophy about maintenance. It is our belief that a client begins maintenance from the first day that they start our program (not a diet). This is achieved by the nature of the program itself. We require you to come into the Clinic for weekly weigh-ins and body composition checks, as well as a monthly doctor consultation. This creates behavior reinforcement. The Smart Cookie squares themselves shift eating behavior so that clients are eating several small, high protein meals each day, which most doctors and nutritionists recommend as the proper way to eat. Additionally, during each visit, we educate you with the most up-to-date scientifically based health information. By the time you achieve your goal weight, you have all you need to keep the weight off. [ Close ] Q:What is a ‘Set Point’? A:The answer to this question also explains why it’s so easy to gain weight but so difficult to lose. The body’s Set Point is nature’s way of determining how much fat an individual needs. Think of it as an internal fat thermostat. For most people within their normal weight range, the body’s Set Point for the amount of body fat is anywhere from 15% to 30%. But like a thermostat, our Set Point can be moved up or down. For example, a 120 pound person gains weight and reaches 180 pounds. If that person maintains that new weight for a sustained period of time, the body will accept the new weight of 180 pounds as its new Set Point. The body will then begin to protect and defend this new weight. This is why when one reaches a new Set Point and then attempts dieting, the body becomes worried about starving and will put in place all of its mechanisms to prevent weight loss. Unfortunately, the body does not have many stops against weight gain. While doctors still do not know precisely how the body determines the ideal Set Point for an individual, they do know that the body measures a substance called Leptin, which is believed to measure the body’s fat stores. Doctors also know that the stomach has “taste receptors” in it, which sense how much fat, sugar and protein a person is eating, to maintain that Set Point. But there is good news! Set Points can be reset by losing weight, and more importantly, maintaining that weight loss for one to two years. Your body will once again create a new Set Point and defend it as fiercely as the old one. Thus, once you have achieved your goal weight, it is imperative that you focus on maintaining it. The longer you maintain this new Set Point, the easier it will be to keep it there. Remember, it does get harder to lose weight and comes off more slowly the further away you move from your old, un-healthy Set Point, but that is just one more reason to stick with our plan.
