Why won’t I be hungry on the Smart for Life® plan?
Hunger occurs when blood sugar and insulin fall – The bigger the fall, the greater the hunger. When you eat three big meals a day, your blood sugar spikes after each one and your body stores fat. Then when your blood sugar eventually falls, you get hungry again. Result: you are never in the fat burning zone very long. By instead eating seven perfectly balanced meals (Smart Cookies, Shakes, Muffins, Soups) throughout the day, you will stay in the fat burning zone continuously. Our Smart Diet foods help you keep your blood sugar balanced, so you are less likely to feel hungry and burn more fat!
What is BMI and why is it important?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height. It provides a reliable indicator for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems. How much fat is my body burning with Smart for Life® Cookie Diet?
While on our weight loss program, you will consume about 800 – 1200 calories on the Lifestyle Program – (Cookie squares and meal) per day from our diet products and a healthy, low fat, high protein dinner. Since a person’s average caloric need is around 2500 calories, your body will be burning up to 1700 calories per day from fat you have already stored.
What are the Smart Cookie squares and how do they work?
The Smart Cookie square features a blend of proprietary protein, fiber and amino acids which are naturally filling and hunger-suppressing. The Smart Cookie squares are all-natural and contain no additives or toxic preservatives like many other diet foods do. They automatically re-train your eating habits to consume six small meals during the day in the form of the Smart Cookie square (or muffin, shake, soup or dessert). What is shelf-stable food and why is Smart for Life® Cookie Diet so against it?
Shelf stable foods are sold by many weight loss companies, and include chicken, pasta, dairy products, etc., that can last on the shelf unrefrigerated for up to 3 years! These foods are filled with preservatives and processed in ways that in Dr. Sass’ and many experts’ opinion is unhealthy. Would you eat a piece of chicken that was at room temperature for over a year? What is in this “food” that even bacteria and insects will not eat it? Just think about that.
How fast can one lose weight on the Smart for Life® Weight Loss Program?
A compliant client can expect to lose between 12-15 pounds every four weeks. However, results vary from person to person. Don’t be surprised if you lose more! Become motivated by browsing through some of our weight loss success stories.
What is a ‘Set Point’ and how does it keep one thin?
The answer to this question also explains why it’s so easy to gain weight but so difficult to lose. The body’s Set Point is nature’s way of determining how much fat an individual needs. Think of it as an internal fat thermostat. For most people within their normal weight range, the body’s Set Point for the amount of body fat is anywhere from 15% to 30%. But like a thermostat, our Set Point can be moved up or down. For example, a 120 pound person gains weight and reaches 180 pounds. If that person maintains that new weight for a sustained period of time, the body will accept the new weight of 180 pounds as its new Set Point. The body will then begin to protect and defend this new weight. This is why when one reaches a new Set Point and then attempts dieting, the body becomes worried about starving and will put in place all of its mechanisms to prevent weight loss. Unfortunately, the body does not have many stops against weight gain. While doctors still do not know precisely how the body determines the ideal Set Point for an individual, they do know that the body measures a substance called Leptin, which is believed to measure the body’s fat stores. Doctors also know that the stomach has “taste receptors” in it, which sense how much fat, sugar and protein a person is eating, to maintain that Set Point. But there is good news! Set Points can be reset by losing weight, and more importantly, maintaining that weight loss for one to two years. Your body will once again create a new Set Point and defend it as fiercely as the old one. Thus, once you have achieved your goal weight, it is imperative that you focus on maintaining it. The longer you maintain this new Set Point, the easier it will be to keep it there. Remember, it does get harder to lose weight and comes off more slowly the further away you move from your old, un-healthy Set Point, but that is just one more reason to stick with our weight loss plan.

How are metabolic problems addressed on the Smart for Life® program?
One out of four of the people we see are unable to lose weight because of an undiagnosed metabolic problem. People with slow metabolism often waste time and money on other diets. They never diagnose the thyroid problem or insulin resistance that so often causes slow metabolism. Smart for Life® physicians identify these problems in approximately 25% of our patients. Contact the Smart for Life® Weight Loss Centers in your area to schedule an appointment. Your first appointment will include a comprehensive medical screening and evaluation from our physician. This includes performing a Body Composition Analysis, appropriate lab work, an electrocardiogram (EKG) and a thorough consult on your medical history. As an added value included in our fees, we supply you with most of the vitamins and supplements you require as part of the program. Then our highly trained professional staff of Counselors will guide you through every step of your customized weight loss program. These counselors are there for you on a daily basis to help ensure your Smart Weight Loss Success.
