New Sugar Recommendations For Adults

Sugar Recommendations 325WI recently read a report stating the new sugar recommendations for adults and wanted to share this information with all of you.

The American Heart Association has come up with the first-ever recommended sugar intake levels for adults, in hopes of spurring healthy eating habits.  This report suggests avoiding all processed foods as much as you can.

Rodale News, Emmaus, PA suggests that while a teaspoon of sugar may make your medicine go down, exceeding your recommended sugar intake could lead to obesity, heart disease, and not so healthy eating habits.  So, how much sugar is sweet, and how much turns your health sour? For the first time ever, the American Heart Association (AHA) has released guidelines giving people an idea of what a healthy daily sugar intake really is.

The Details: The AHA statement, pushed online in the journal circulation, makes the point that added sugars, such as high-fructose corn syrup or ordinary table sugar added to sodas, breads, and other processed foods, are likely responsible for the increase in calorie consumption and the subsequent rise in obesity of the past few decades. Furthermore, people who have unhealthy sugar intake levels also consume lower levels of vital nutrients, such as zinc, iron, calcium, and vitamin A.  One study even suggested that too much sugar can raise blood pressure levels.  I would like to point out that the report also notes that over the past 30 years, we’ve consumed an average of 150 to 300 more calories per day than we used to.   50% of these consumed calories come from beverages.  Keep in mind also that our physical activity levels remain unchanged, so the extra calories do not get burned off.

Do SmartforLife® Products Follow The Sugar Recommendations?

I’d like to bring to your attention that all of our Smart for Life products are not only low in sugar, but are suitable for most diabetics.  Smart for Life cookies are made with just 2-5 grams of sugar per serving, as well as our cupcakes.  Even our delicious cereals contain just 8 grams of sugar per serving. I created Smart for Life products to keep your body in a low glycemic index, which in turn keeps your sugar and insulin low, in a fat burning no- hunger zone. This unique blend of protein then suppresses your hunger while the fiber expands like a sponge to fill you up.

To make a comparison, surveys have also found that the average American consumes around 22.2 teaspoons of added sugar each day. According to the new guidelines, we should really be eating a fraction of that amount. The Smartforlife® sugar recommendations for adult women is 5 teaspoons (20 grams) of sugar per day, while for men it is 9 teaspoons (36 grams) daily.  For children, it is just 3 teaspoons (12 grams) per day.

Snacking On The Go

Snacking on the go never got easier! It’s Spring, and you know that means! Baseball games, t-ball games, days at the park…snacking on the go tons of ways that your kids are working out and playing hard!

Finding snacks that can keep up with active kids can be tough. You don’t want to load them down with sugary snacks that give them a rush of energy and then a crash soon afterward. I want snacks and drinks that are healthy, will give my kids the nutrients they need, and things they think taste great.

Recently, I was introduced to two new products that are great for active kids!

First, HINT water. HINT is flavored water that has no calories, sweeteners, or preservatives. It’s a great alternative to juice, soda, and sports drinks.

I received several bottles of HINT water to test out with my kids. My kids love to play hard, and they get thirsty! They each tried a bottle of HINT water, and they loved it! The smell of the drink is strong, but there’s just the slightest hint of flavor in the taste. The kids thought that was really cool, and they guzzled down their bottles of HINT water. The Watermelon and Blackberry flavors were their favorites.

Hint is available in 10 delicious flavors: Watermelon, Blackberry, Mango-Grapefruit, Honeydew Hibiscus, Pomegranate-Tangerine, Lime, Raspberry-Lime, Pear, Cucumber, and Strawberry Kiwi. It has appeared on popular shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Boston Legal, CSI, The Early Show and more. It’s available in Whole Foods and Starbucks.

For more information on HINT, visit www.drinkHINT.com.

Snacking On The Go With The Cookie Diet

The second set of products I was introduced to were Smart for Life Cookies. The kids absolutely loved these! They were just what they needed to keep them playing hard and having a good time. I love that the Smart for Life Cookies can also be used as a weight loss supplement. Because these cookies have a unique blend of protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and other nutrients, they’re great to use as meal replacement bars, or for replenishing all the nutrients kids run off while they’re playing hard!

The kids gobbled these up after playing hard, but it wasn’t so filling that they wouldn’t eat their dinner a few hours later. These healthy cookies make snacking on the go convenient.

To learn more about the entire range of Smart for Life products, visit their website: www.smartforlife.com.

Overall, I’m completely impressed with both HINT and Smart for Life, and I think they’re a great snack and drink option for super active kids like mine.

mothertalk product review

Here’s what MotherTalk reviewers are saying about Smart for Life:

Motherhood Moment says: “The concept of Smart for Life is simple: eat cookies and lose weight. They are specially formulated cookies that are high protein and fiber to keep you feeling full. The products are all natural and are made with 60% organic ingredients.”

OTC Soukii says: “My result: I lost 5 pounds the week I tried the products and included 4 workouts at my gym.”

kirida reviews says: “The cupcakes were very tasty and much bigger than I had imagined. They were little cups that had a warm and rich taste. Often cupcakes are more flighty, tasty but without the substance that keeps me hungry for more. They were filling and sweet, a perfect way to introduce anyone to this diet.”

The Plus Size Mommy says: “I can DEFINITELY say that in my experience I have noticed my need to eat has been a lot less. Also, I can say in my experience this past week I have lost 4 pounds!”

Hip Mama’s Place says: “I have trouble controlling my eating these days and underWAY supplement drinks could be my answer to naturally suppress my appetite! And, it’s really a thirst quencher too. I love the Acai-Pomegranate flavor the best!”

Dagmar’s momsense says: “The drinks work to naturally suppress your appetite, and I have to say that I was skeptic but they did seem to curb my appetite and I liked the flavors.”

Life is like champagne… says: “I tried the Grape and the Acaci-Pomegranate drinks and both flavors were refreshing and did not have that sweet after taste that you often get with supplement drinks.  My favorite was the Acaci-Pomegranate as it was light, and a nice flavor.  I was surprised how it did make me feel full for a long time.”

Dragonflies ‘n Daydreams says: “I fell in LOVE with the Chocolate Mountain Cupcakes. Can you spell Y-U-M-M-Y? Oh just thinking about them make me wanna go in there and eat one. ”

KatyShops says: “Conclusion – these are a great way for a busy person to keep their diet in check.  They do all of the thinking for you – you just eat.”

Fictionary says: “What’s more, its unique ingredients stimulate your stomach, telling your brain you’ve consumed more calories that you really have which, with underWAY, is almost zero!”

Mommy’s Must Haves says: “All of these products are designed to work together, with the solid foods being interchangeable in the diet to provide some variety.”

1stopmom says:  “They are made to satisfy your hunger while helping you gain control over your cravings throughout the day. They did that for me.  Six cookies come in a package that you eat every two hours or when you feel hungry. I am a big snack person so this is perfect for me. Just remember to warm them up in the microwave.”

MommyMandy says: “I do like the idea of the products have a normal lever of glucose and insulin because I know how important it is to not consume too much because your body can’t handle too much glucose and insulin.”

Everyday Linasea says: “One of the great things about the cookies and the cupcakes is that they’re very portable. I threw a few in a baggie, stuck them in my purse and ran off to gymnastics and swimming lessons. Kept me away from the snack bar!”

Lille Pumkin’ Reviews says: “My favorite is the carrot muffin — they were like a tiny carrot cake.  A little dry right out of the package, the directions recommend that you microwave it for a few seconds for the best flavor, and I agree.  With 10 seconds in the micro, they came out soft, warm, and the frosting very gooey.  These were delish!”

Gloria’s Place says: “The Acai-Pomegranate drinks were absolutely delicious. So were the Smart For Life chocolate chip cookies. I really enjoyed eating these for a late night snack and having one between each meal or instead of a meal.”

The Champagne Living says: “…if you tend to overeat from hunger, these can be a great way to help lose those extra pounds.”

Musings from Me says: “We liked that the products were packaged in small packs. The size of the package was small enough for me to eat in 2 days or the whole family to eat in one sitting.”

Watch Us Grow! says: “Now, I didn’t follow the cookie diet program. But guess what? I still lost 2 lbs over the course of time I was testing these products! Made me wonder what would happen if I really did stick to the diet.”

Mom of 2 Dancers Reviews says: “I took one to drink on the way to working at a Tigers baseball game yesterday.  If the games are busy, it is really hard to find the time to take a break to eat something.  Since we are near food at all times, it is really hard not to want to eat!  The Underway drink totally took away my hunger.  It was pretty cool!  I also tend to get hungry around 10 or 11 at night.  I’m more of a night person, but have heard eating late is bad for you.  The Underway takes away those night cravings!  This product is really cool.”

Dana Reviews says: “My husband tried the Momma’s Chicken Noodle soup and loved it! He said it was the best “diet” soup he’d ever tasted. And the Smart Bagels are so darn good. I wish I had two packages of those!”

ECing and Attachment Parenting says: “My favorite of all of them were the chocolate chip cookies.  They were soft, and when eat them and drank one of the under-WAY waters at the same time, they were not only edible, but pretty yummy.”

Homeschool Parent says: “I have never found “diet food” to be particularly yummy, but so far everything I’ve tasted has been super yummy!  I especially liked the shakes and the carrot sunshine cupcakes.”

The Parents with Style says: “Easy for a busy bee who feels they don’t have time to make healthy food from scratch. While I was taste testing all of these foods, I figured that they would all taste like cardboard. Well, I was wrong they actually had a nice flavor and were easy to eat.”

Cuddle Cottage says: “Before you start feeling awful for me and my endless cycle of failed diets, let me tell you about a breakthrough in this sad cycle. I’ve shed a several pounds over the last week and a half! I am so excited! My will power cannot take all (actually any) of the credit. I have had help in the form of some great products from underWAY and Smart for Life.”

Limit Your Sugar

Sugar Recommendations 325WWe all know the disadvantages of sugar and how bad it is for you but now the American Heart Association is urging consumers to seriously cut back on the amount of sugar they get from foods such as soft drinks, cookies and ice cream.  You may not think you are consuming that much sugar but you know there have been times when you have had all three of these foods in one day.
Studies show that women should limit their sugar intake to 100 calories, or about six teaspoons, a day; for men, 150 calories, or nine teaspoons. Sound like a lot? Just one 12-ounce can of cola has about 130 calories, or eight teaspoons of sugar. One soda and you’ve reached or passed your daily sugar allowance.
A national survey has shown that Americans consume on average 355 calories, or more than 22 teaspoons, of sugar a day. That’s just crazy. Our bodies are not meant or designed to process so much sugar. That is why we have an obesity and diabetic epidemic. If you don’t want to be a part of it, it’s time to limit your sugar!
The American Heart Association has continually warned us to watch our sugar intake but now it is suggesting specific limits. These limits apply to what are known as added sugars – those that are added to foods during manufacturing, or by consumers. They do not include sugar that occurs naturally in fruits, vegetables, dairy products and other foods.
I urge you to keep track of your sugar intake. You may not realize all the sugar you are eating. It’s mostly found in soft drinks, candy, desserts such as cakes and cookies, fruit drinks and sweetened dairy products, including ice cream and yogurt. Don’t forget that sugar in alcoholic beverages also counts as added sugar. All these added sugars do not give you any health benefit whatsoever. All they do for you is add calories. You do not have to eliminate sugars altogether because the body needs these to survive, but you should limit your sugar intake in order to keep a healthy lifestyle.

Smart for Life Cookie Diet

Frequent meals-cookie dietThe Smart for Life Cookie Diet is so much more than a weight loss company.  We are committed to helping our clients not only lose weight but also to get healthy.  As a bariatric physician, I founded Smart for Life Cookie Diet based of my realizations of how food affects our health and I use the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) Guidelines.  The ASBP is a 50-year old organization which teaches physicians the fundamentals of weight loss.

As an emergency room doctor, I saw too many heart attacks in 30 and 40-year olds.  I knew I had to do something and I did.  I created a comprehensive weight management approach to health and wellness.  How?  By using natural, hunger-controlling diet foods.  Smart for Life® Cookie Diet is quick, safe, easy and affordable!

I knew our products had to be free of chemicals, such as pesticides and preservatives.  We use triple-filtered water and pesticide-free organic food ingredients without toxins and preservatives.  Our products are 60% organic and all natural.  Using natural ingredients has many health benefits such as reducing cholesterol, increasing bone health, improving intestinal health and maintaining cholesterol, glucose and insulin levels that are already in the normal range.  Our foods combine a perfect balance of protein, carbohydrates, fiber and other nutrients that leave you satisfied, control your hunger naturally and provide the opportunity to reach your weight loss goals once and for all.

Not only am I concerned about what goes into Smart for Life® cookies but I also care about their manufacture.  The American Institute of Baking has developed the Gold Standard or Baker’s Quality Seal to assure customers that the facility manufacturing this product has met the highest and most rigorous standards of cleanliness, food safety, ingredient quality and manufacturing integrity.   It shows proficiency in controlling and continuously improving the quality and safety programs used in the manufacturing of products, such as our Smart for Life® diet cookies.  To earn this seal, a company and every person working there has made a total commitment to product quality and safety, a commitment such as the one that Smart for Life® Cookie Diet has made to you.

Smart for Life® diet cookies are great for people on-the-go.  These delicious, all-natural, diet cookies are made with perfectly balanced fruits, proteins, fiber and vegetables for a meal you can carry anywhere.  No cooking or planning necessary!

But Smart for Life Cookie Diet is more than just the cookie diet.  We offer a wide array of great tasting foods that are made with the same Smart for Life® benefits and high quality you find in our cookies.  We offer a 14 day variety kit that contains 5 packs of chocolate Smart cookies, 4 packs of oatmeal raisin Smart cookies, 2 packs of blueberry Smart cookies, 1 Ready-to-Go chocolate shake, 2 Ready-to-Go vanilla shakes, 1 chocolate shake pouch, 1 vanilla shake pouch, 3 chicken soup pouches, 1 beef soup pouch, 1 ZilchTMFrench vanilla coffee creamer, 1 Randy’s Smart carnival mustard, 1 chocolate pudding pouch, 1 vanilla pudding pouch, 2 packs of orange-cranberry muffins and 1 pouch of each Smart for Life® dressing/marinade – Janis’ Moon Lite Marinade, Caribbean Splash, Chinese Chicken Salad and Lemon-Garlic.  And they all can be delivered to your door for free!

You can also order these items separately and make your own “variety” kit.  For a delicious cup of coffee or tea, fat and calorie-free, stir in one tablespoon of Zilch, the Smart coffee creamer. A cup of coffee with cream has 40 calories. At two cups a day, you’re looking at 28,000 calories per year or, worse yet, an extra eight pounds!  Cream and milk have lactose which is milk sugar.  This will increase your hunger and insulin and slow your weight loss.  Finally!  Great tasting creamers with zilch, zero, absolutely no calories!  And why not have some Smart Crunch with your coffee. Smart Crunch is the easy take-along that you can pop in your mouth when you’re on the go.  It contains SASSON Technology™ (Smart Appetite Suppressing Sustained Organic Nutrition) and HeroFiber™ which suppresses your appetite.  Just one gram of HeroFiber™ contains the benefits found in nine grams of ordinary fiber.  There are so many ways to create healthy and tasty choices with Smart for Life® Cookie Diet products.

Smart for Life® Cookie Diet also has a way to introduce kids to healthy, tasty, quick and easy choices instead of fast food and poor nutrition.  Many fast foods are made with unhealthy ingredients such as preservatives, pesticides and toxins, not to mention sugar and high fructose corn syrup.  ThinAdventure™ foods are made with natural and organic ingredients.  ThinAdventure™ foods are healthy snacks or meal replacements that the whole family can enjoy.  ThinAdventure™ is very kid-friendly because it also includes a variety of choices including cupcakes, cookies, shakes and hot cocoa.  To motivate kids on their journey, ThinAdventure™ has created an interactive children’s website packed with information, nutrition related games, recipes and more.  It teaches children about such topics as exercise, protein portions and what they should be eating to maintain their weight and proper health.

In addition to the Smart for Life® Cookie Diet and ThinAdventure™ healthy meal plans, you can now enjoy underWAY™, the first true appetite suppressant supplement drink.  It is available in four nutritious and delicious flavors – Acai Pomegranate, Grape, Green Tea and Orange.  underWAY™ not only suppresses your appetite naturally and quenches your thirst but it is filled with HeroFiber™.  HeroFiber™ is the same ingredient used in many of Smart for Life®’s other diet products.  One bottle of underWAY™ delivers the equivalent of 9 grams of fiber in only 20 calories.  It contains no preservatives, no sodium and no caffeine.  underWAY is another line of attack in the Smart for Life® Cookie Diet arsenal in the war against fat. (DR. SASS BLOG)

It may be hard to distinguish who is an ally and who is an enemy in the war against fat.  With so many weight loss companies in the market, it is difficult to figure out who’s who.  This Smart for Life® Cookie Diet website gives detailed comparisons between itself and other programs such as Atkins, Medifast, South Beach Diet. Dr. Siegal Cookie Diet,Hollywood Cookie Diet, Physicians Weight Loss, Zone Diet, Herbalife, Weight Watchers, Optifast, Quick Loss Weight Center, Matrix Diet, and diet bar programs.  The website provides detailed information such as  Smart for Life® Cookie Diet is the only plan that gives you a physical exam with an EKG (electrocardiogram) and blood work.  Smart for Life® Cookie Diet also is the only plan to give you a metabolic evaluation, with treatment if necessary.  Smart for Life® Cookie Diet also is the only one who includes a product philosophy for all vitamins and supplements, uses organic and natural ingredients and uses triple filtered water.
