The Importance of Water For Weight Loss

triple-filtered water-weight lossDrinking water does not scream out as being one of the best weight loss options out there, but it technically is. Any weight loss program that is not built on the foundations of drinking water will not lead to quality results. If you want to lose weight, it is important to at least drink eight glasses of water a day. This is the bare minimum for those who want to start shedding all of that excess weight as soon as possible. Let’s take a look at the importance of water and why it is of utmost importance when it comes to losing weight fast and efficiently.

Water Clears Toxins

The number one reason for drinking water when losing weight has to do with the clearing of toxins that are present inside. The body will start to accumulate bad toxins over time and these can decide to reside inside the body for long periods.

Water is the only solution to make sure they are flushed out in a healthy manner as soon as possible. The water will be able to make sure those toxins are a thing of the past.

If those toxins remain inside, they will wreak havoc not only on your health, but your desire to lose weight as well.

Water Helps Digestive System

If you are going to lose weight, the digestive system is going to be the star of the show. If you are able to get the digestive system on your side, you will get results.

The digestive system can become overwhelmed when changes are being made and water has to be its fuel. It is just like a car and gasoline. Water has to be consumed in order to keep the digestive system revving as it is supposed to at all times.

Water Fills You Up

This is one of those benefits that is often overlooked until you are going through with the process. You will start to notice that water fills you up which means you won’t feel hungry throughout the day and start craving food.

This is great for those who are trying to cut down on how much they are consuming on a regular basis. It is easy to start losing weight when you are drinking water because of how fast it can fill you up.

When you are filled up, you won’t look to start going off track in order to fulfill your needs.

Replaces Bad Beverages

This is similar to feel ‘full’ and has to do with not wanting to drink other beverages that would otherwise have been included with the meal.

It is best to drink water with all of your meals in order to see results. The reason for water being great is that it will flush down the food and make sure you don’t drink other beverages (i.e sodas) along with the meal.

It is a true ‘win-win’ situation for the body as it is able to flush down the food that has been consumed while getting a drink in too.

These are just some of the reasons for water being an incredible influence on losing weight fast. There are many people out there who are unaware of the benefits of water and simply start to starve themselves. If water is not being consumed throughout the day, It will become near impossible for the body to get the most out of your weight loss routine whatever it may be. You have to make sure the water that is being consumed is being done on a regular basis to get the most out of your daily routine.

Why drinking water is so important during weight loss

Drinking Water Helps Escalate Weight Loss

Drinking water, a generous amount daily, is absolutely essential to the successdrinking water of your weight loss program.  If you’re eating a balanced diet and getting regular exercise but still not shedding those pounds; chances are you’re just not drinking enough water.

Water has such a vital role in the proper functioning of the human body and that holds true in the metabolism of fat.  Your kidneys rely on a certain level of water to function efficiently and when they are dehydrated, a significant portion of their workload is transferred to the liver.  When the liver has to divide its attention, it can’t put all of its energy into turning fat to energy.  So, as the liver metabolizes less fat; you lose less weight.

Additionally, without the proper amount of water, the body goes into survival mode.  This means that your body prepares for a possible emergency situation by storing all the water it can get.  It will take it from anywhere and store or “retain” it in places such as your ankles, hips, thighs and even around your stomach.

In simplest terms, when you’re dehydrated, your metabolism slows and so does your weight loss.  A sluggish metabolism cannot burn calories as fast and efficiently as it does when you’re drinking the recommended amount of water on a daily basis.  The fat tissue will stop having blood flow through it, and thus, no fat removal.  Healthcare professionals agree that 64 ounces of water, spread out over the course of the day is an ideal amount to maintain the processes vital to weight loss.  If you happen to be considerably overweight, an additional 8 ounces for every 25 pounds of excess weight is recommended.

Signs of dehydration

Mild: thirst, headache, fatigue, flushed skin, dry mouth and throat-

Moderate: rapid heart rate, dizziness, low blood pressure, weakness and lack of energy, highly concentrated urine but low in volume-

Severe: muscle spasms, swollen tongue, poor circulation, increased weakness, failing kidney function-

Drink your water!

Studies Report The Effects Of Water Consumption On Weight Loss

Faster Weight Loss By Drinking Water

Although the evidence is not overwhelming, the scales are beginning to tip in favor of plentiful water consumption as an aid in weight loss strategies, according to the article recently posted in Reuters Health by Kerry Grens.

As a researcher at the Berlin School of Public Health, Rebecca Muckelbauer was often being asked if drinking water would aid in weight loss and decided to review numerous weight and water studies in search of an answer.  Rebecca and her team found eleven studies that fit their criteria.  Three of these studies provided evidence that weight loss was positively influenced by increased water consumption.  Another study, with middle aged and older individuals, showed that drinking two cups of water prior to a meal caused an increase of four additional pounds lost, compared to those who did not begin their meals with water.  Another study showed that the women who increased their water intake while dieting lost more weight than the women who kept their intake below a liter a day.

Water Helps Weight Loss By Making You Feel Full

drinking waterIt’s not clear, from these studies, why water has this effect on weight loss.  Perhaps, suggested Brenda Davy, a Virginia Tech professor who assisted in the reviews, it’s as simple as the water providing a feeling of fullness, which in turn would keep calorie consumption lower.  Muckelbauer agreed and added that it may also have to do with the lesser-known idea of “water-induced thermogenesis”.   According to Muckelbauer, “drinking water itself increases energy expenditure of your body.  It has an energy consuming effect.  This is not very well studied.”

The Institute of Medicine recommends that adult female adults consume around 90 ounces of water per day and male adults around 125 ounces per day.  This total can be reached through plain water, other beverages and foods.

Muckelbauer concludes that it would be beneficial to have larger experiments exploring the potential benefits of adding more water to our diets in our weight loss endeavors.

At Smart for Life we have believed in and experienced the benefits of generous water consumption for years.  Take the effort to provide clean, pure water for yourself and watch the improvement in your overall health and complexion.  Many of us have been dehydrated for years and don’t even know it.  Water up and see just how good you’ll feel!

Bottled water costs 100 times more than tap water, although 25% to 40% of bottled water originates from tap water, some brands of bottled water have 40 times as much oxygen as conventional water.  You may see advertisements that claim oxygen improves your athletic performance, but scientists have found that it does not help your athletic ability.  Drinking a lot of water can promote weight loss, but you can get the same results from ordinary water.

Water Contamination

Environmental Toxicants water contaminationIn a previous blog I explained many of the benefits Smart for Life® provides that other diets do not.  One of those benefits is that we use triple filtered water because most municipal water systems frequently have water contamination in them and sometimes more.

It seems water contamination is in the news every day.  A recent research study shows that an estimated one in 10 Americans have been exposed to drinking water that contains dangerous chemicals.

Because most water pollutants have no scent or taste, many people do not realize they are consuming these chemicals, even after they become sick.

This is why we only use triple filtered water.  We continue to emphasize that the Smart for Life program is based on sound scientific facts and water contamination is one area that has been studied consistently.

The research study also reported that “because it is difficult to determine what causes diseases like cancer, it is impossible to know how many illnesses are the result of water pollution, or contaminants’ role in the health problems of specific individuals”.

That is why Smart for Life provides clients with support and expert guidance because we know that working together with a doctor will help you achieve results faster and with more success.  If you have any health conditions or medications that require close attention, our Smart for Life staff and Medical Director are available to you.

Do You Have Water Contamination At Home?

You can also check your home’s water as well.  To start, check your water utility’s “Consumer Confidence Report,” which it must mail to you each year before July 1 by law.  The report details where your drinking water comes from, what contaminants have been found in it and how contaminant levels compare to national standards.  You can also call your utility and ask for a copy, or visit http://www.epa.gov/safewater to see if it’s online

The Smart for Life team will continue to go above and beyond the usual requirements to provide a safe and effective program that ensures your short and long term success.  Triple filtered water is just one more beneficial step we add to your weight loss journey.

Sugary Drinks Linked to Diabetes

Consumption of at least 1 sugary drinks per day is significantly associated with the development of diabetes, according to a report by Vasanti S. Malik, ScD and his colleagues with the Harvard School of Public Heath, as reported in Diabetes Care.

Sugar-sweetened beverages were defined as soft drinks, fruit drinks, sports drinks, energy and vitamin water, sweetened iced tea, punch, cordials, squashes and lemonade.  Not included were 100% fruit juices without added sweeteners.

Dr. Malik notes that although consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks has been associated with weight gain, their role in the development of diabetes has not been reviewed.  According to Dr. Malik and the researchers, the high content of rapidly absorbable carbohydrates in sugar-sweetened drinks may increase risk of diabetes not only through obesity, but also by increasing glycemic load, leading to insulin resistance and inflammation.

How About One Sugary Drink?

One single extra sugary drink has about 200 calories.  That is equivalent to a 20 pound weight gain per year.

This study further supports my reasons to stay away from sugar-sweetened beverages and switch to healthy alternatives, such as water. Get started with SmartforLife® today and lose weight fast.

Energy Drinks Affecting Waistline of America’s Youth

By Sasson Moulavi - November 30, 2006

Smart for Life™ Weight Management Centers Educate Against Childhood Obesity

Smart for Life™ Weight Management Centers warns parents against giving high-sugar energy drinks to children as these supercharged drinks are adding extra pounds to the continually growing obesity rate among children and adolescents in the United States.

Dr. Sasson Moulavi, Chief Medical Director of the Boca Raton based weight loss company explains, “The number of overweight children coming to our centers continue to grow. When I review the child’s current diet, I am finding an alarming trend – energy drinks. Not only are these drinks loaded with extra caffeine, which is not healthy for children, but also packed with empty calories.” With more than 500 different drinks on the market, the 3.4 billion dollar energy drink industry is willing and able to target young people with a barrage of marketing messages which includes using these drinks as a weight loss tool. This message can be misleading as just two cans can contain as much as 14 teaspoons of sugar.

Other Health Issues From Energy Drinks

In addition to gaining excess pounds, continual use of these drinks can lead to other health issues such as diabetes. Dr. Moulavi warns, “Parents, teachers and public officials should be aware of this growing, and very dangerous trend among our young people. Many current and future health related issues can be avoided if we teach our children to make healthy choices now, such as reaching for bottled water and not energy drinks.“

Smart for Life™ Weight Management Centers specialize in medically supervised weight loss programs and have locations throughout the United States and Canada with centers in cities as Boca Raton, FL; Beverly Hills, CA; New York, NY; Rochester Hills, MI; and Boston, MA. The Smart for Life™ Weight Management program helps clients make positive changes in their lives by helping them reach and maintain their weight loss goals.
