Let’s Move! Creating Awareness Of Childhood Obesity

Dr. Sasson Moulavi, M.D. Commends the First Lady And Puts The Childhood Obesity Blame On The Parents.

Boca Raton, FL – February 16, 2010 – First Lady Michelle Obama has announced her new campaign against childhood obesity -Let’s Move!  And that’s just what she wants children to do.  And just because she knows the big man in the White House, do not expect the government to fund this initiative.

Boca Raton DoctorBariatric physician Dr. Sasson “Dr. Sass” Moulavi says, “I commend the First Lady for making people more aware of childhood obesity.  It’s an epidemic, an epidemic that was created by irresponsible food companies, parents and government.”

The first lady’s campaign has four parts: helping parents make better food choices, serving healthier food in school, making healthy food more available and affordable, and encouraging children to exercise more. Nowhere in her campaign does she mention that any government aide will be allocated for this initiative.

What parents need to realize is their child’s weight is their responsibility.  The first item on Mrs. Obama’s agenda is helping parents make better food choices.  This puts the problem right in the parents’ laps.  The government is not making these food choices for your child.  You are the parent.

Dr. Sass expresses his concern:  “My worry is some parents will sit back and wait for the government to come up with a magic plan.  It is not going to happen.  Although First Lady Michelle Obama may create awareness, parents need to realize they must take the initiative now.  They have to stop waiting for a solution to fall from the sky.  That’s just magical thinking.

“Unfortunately it comes down to money.  We all understand that your local municipal, state and federal governments are all underwater financially when it comes to school lunch programs.  It is cheaper to provide an eight cent doughnut than a healthy meal.  This is a budgetary choice without your children’s health and nutritional needs in mind.  As for the parents providing healthy nutrition in the house, the same food choices confront them in the supermarket and unfortunately the unhealthy, artificial foods are less expensive than the healthy foods”

As parents, you need to take the first step in helping your child have a strong and healthy future free of childhood obesity.

Doctor Urges People To Eat Less, Save Money And Send It To Haiti

give to haitiJanuary 25, 2010 – Boca Raton, FL – Dr. Sasson Moulavi, M.D., the creator of the Smart for Life® Cookie Diet, urges all Americans to lose weight by skipping a meal, saving the money and in turn sending it to Haiti.

“We eat too much, they don’t eat enough. Let’s all start replacing some meals we probably don’t need with a Smart for Life® healthy cookie.  That money you save can be donated to the Haiti Relief Efforts,” recommends Dr. Sass.

Smart for Life® will be giving away thousands of their 105 calorie Smart for Life® Cookie Meals to help people skip a meal without hunger.  The company will be distributing up to 10,000 cookies in the U.S. in Smart for Life® Weight Management Centers, local business and shopping malls beginning January 25th.  For every cookie eaten, people skip a meal and are then are able to donate the money that would have been spent (roughly $10).  We believe that this would raise approximately $100,000 in donations.  By saving the money spent on a meal, people will make a donation, without any cost to them and provide the opportunity to improve the health of both nations.

It is estimated that over 300,000 people die a year from obesity ( – and obesity is quickly overtaking heart disease and cancer as the number one cause of death in the U.S.  If you add the millions who die from malnutrition ( around the world, that’s a real catastrophe.  According to the World Health Organization, more than 70% of children with protein-energy malnutrition live in Asia, 26% live in Africa, and 4% in Latin America and the Caribbean (WHO 2000).  By these standards, we Americans are gluttons.

“All of these extra calories can be skipped and the money sent over to Haiti to help these people who have nothing to eat, no electricity to cook, or refrigeration.  Skip the $4 espresso latte, the fatty steak sub with fries and send the cash to the people that need it most.  Cash donations work much better than food donations because with cash, you can improve the local economy,” said Dr. Sass “It sickens me to see already overweight people in malls lined up to spend money on garbage food that’s going to harm them.  Then we sit at home watching malnourished people lining up for a little ration of food. Please skip that next meal and send it to the hungry people in Haiti.”

The Smart for Life® Cookie Meals will be distributed through Smart for Life® Weight Management Centers free of charge (One per person).

Skip a meal, lose the weight, save the money and send it to Haiti.

Parents Need A Backbone If They Want Healthy Kids

Obese Hungry Boy With Giant Burger
January 21, 2010 – Boca Raton, FL –
Many parents become passive when it comes to their children’s food choices and aren’t raising healthy kids.  The growing epidemic of obesity in America is a strong indicator of this lapse in parenting and the lack of healthy kids.  With the variety of resources available from the USDA My Pyramid program to local schools’ curriculum, Dr. Sasson (“Dr. Sass”) Moulavi, M.D., is surprised by parents’ neglect when it comes to allowing poor food choices for children.

“Recently in my office, concerned parents brought in their 12-year-old girl because she was 30 pounds overweight and complaining of fatigue. During the educational process, this child turned to her parents and told them that she will decide what to eat and what to buy, and they can’t do anything about it.  Then she left the center and her parents could not get her back in,” comments Dr. Sass who is Board Certified in Bariatric Medicine.

Dr. Sass has observed good intending parents hoping to improve kids’ weight issues with healthier foods become overpowered by kids’ aggressive, degrading speech.  Usually, the parents do not react with any significant or meaningful response. Instead, the child gets away with it.

Many parents find it difficult to refuse children’s poor choices when it comes to nutrition.  Frequently, shopping carts are filled with high fat, high sugar foods that are convenient and easy to give to children.

Further recommendations from Dr. Sass listed below can start the conversation and introduce new “rules”.  On-going parenting is necessary to teach kids about good nutrition and choices to be made.

  • Explain food groups and ask where their favorite foods fall.
  • Show kids nutrition panels of foods to compare calories, fat, sugars, sodium – that alone may prompt them to make healthier choices.  Arm them with information for them to be in control.  Rarely will a kid seriously choose something unhealthy when given facts.  If they do…put your foot down and tell them that you will not allow it.
  • Allow occasional splurges kids can earn them track per day.  Cutting back on 1-2/day will be a start.
  • For young children, be the family’s “Healthy Hero” and challenge them to pick nutritious choices in a fun, light manner.

In addition, Dr. Sass is working on a FREE educational weight loss video that will be available for parents on and at

Limit Your Sugar

Sugar Recommendations 325WWe all know the disadvantages of sugar and how bad it is for you but now the American Heart Association is urging consumers to seriously cut back on the amount of sugar they get from foods such as soft drinks, cookies and ice cream.  You may not think you are consuming that much sugar but you know there have been times when you have had all three of these foods in one day.
Studies show that women should limit their sugar intake to 100 calories, or about six teaspoons, a day; for men, 150 calories, or nine teaspoons. Sound like a lot? Just one 12-ounce can of cola has about 130 calories, or eight teaspoons of sugar. One soda and you’ve reached or passed your daily sugar allowance.
A national survey has shown that Americans consume on average 355 calories, or more than 22 teaspoons, of sugar a day. That’s just crazy. Our bodies are not meant or designed to process so much sugar. That is why we have an obesity and diabetic epidemic. If you don’t want to be a part of it, it’s time to limit your sugar!
The American Heart Association has continually warned us to watch our sugar intake but now it is suggesting specific limits. These limits apply to what are known as added sugars – those that are added to foods during manufacturing, or by consumers. They do not include sugar that occurs naturally in fruits, vegetables, dairy products and other foods.
I urge you to keep track of your sugar intake. You may not realize all the sugar you are eating. It’s mostly found in soft drinks, candy, desserts such as cakes and cookies, fruit drinks and sweetened dairy products, including ice cream and yogurt. Don’t forget that sugar in alcoholic beverages also counts as added sugar. All these added sugars do not give you any health benefit whatsoever. All they do for you is add calories. You do not have to eliminate sugars altogether because the body needs these to survive, but you should limit your sugar intake in order to keep a healthy lifestyle.

Smart for Life Cookie Diet

Frequent meals-cookie dietThe Smart for Life Cookie Diet is so much more than a weight loss company.  We are committed to helping our clients not only lose weight but also to get healthy.  As a bariatric physician, I founded Smart for Life Cookie Diet based of my realizations of how food affects our health and I use the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) Guidelines.  The ASBP is a 50-year old organization which teaches physicians the fundamentals of weight loss.

As an emergency room doctor, I saw too many heart attacks in 30 and 40-year olds.  I knew I had to do something and I did.  I created a comprehensive weight management approach to health and wellness.  How?  By using natural, hunger-controlling diet foods.  Smart for Life® Cookie Diet is quick, safe, easy and affordable!

I knew our products had to be free of chemicals, such as pesticides and preservatives.  We use triple-filtered water and pesticide-free organic food ingredients without toxins and preservatives.  Our products are 60% organic and all natural.  Using natural ingredients has many health benefits such as reducing cholesterol, increasing bone health, improving intestinal health and maintaining cholesterol, glucose and insulin levels that are already in the normal range.  Our foods combine a perfect balance of protein, carbohydrates, fiber and other nutrients that leave you satisfied, control your hunger naturally and provide the opportunity to reach your weight loss goals once and for all.

Not only am I concerned about what goes into Smart for Life® cookies but I also care about their manufacture.  The American Institute of Baking has developed the Gold Standard or Baker’s Quality Seal to assure customers that the facility manufacturing this product has met the highest and most rigorous standards of cleanliness, food safety, ingredient quality and manufacturing integrity.   It shows proficiency in controlling and continuously improving the quality and safety programs used in the manufacturing of products, such as our Smart for Life® diet cookies.  To earn this seal, a company and every person working there has made a total commitment to product quality and safety, a commitment such as the one that Smart for Life® Cookie Diet has made to you.

Smart for Life® diet cookies are great for people on-the-go.  These delicious, all-natural, diet cookies are made with perfectly balanced fruits, proteins, fiber and vegetables for a meal you can carry anywhere.  No cooking or planning necessary!

But Smart for Life Cookie Diet is more than just the cookie diet.  We offer a wide array of great tasting foods that are made with the same Smart for Life® benefits and high quality you find in our cookies.  We offer a 14 day variety kit that contains 5 packs of chocolate Smart cookies, 4 packs of oatmeal raisin Smart cookies, 2 packs of blueberry Smart cookies, 1 Ready-to-Go chocolate shake, 2 Ready-to-Go vanilla shakes, 1 chocolate shake pouch, 1 vanilla shake pouch, 3 chicken soup pouches, 1 beef soup pouch, 1 ZilchTMFrench vanilla coffee creamer, 1 Randy’s Smart carnival mustard, 1 chocolate pudding pouch, 1 vanilla pudding pouch, 2 packs of orange-cranberry muffins and 1 pouch of each Smart for Life® dressing/marinade – Janis’ Moon Lite Marinade, Caribbean Splash, Chinese Chicken Salad and Lemon-Garlic.  And they all can be delivered to your door for free!

You can also order these items separately and make your own “variety” kit.  For a delicious cup of coffee or tea, fat and calorie-free, stir in one tablespoon of Zilch, the Smart coffee creamer. A cup of coffee with cream has 40 calories. At two cups a day, you’re looking at 28,000 calories per year or, worse yet, an extra eight pounds!  Cream and milk have lactose which is milk sugar.  This will increase your hunger and insulin and slow your weight loss.  Finally!  Great tasting creamers with zilch, zero, absolutely no calories!  And why not have some Smart Crunch with your coffee. Smart Crunch is the easy take-along that you can pop in your mouth when you’re on the go.  It contains SASSON Technology™ (Smart Appetite Suppressing Sustained Organic Nutrition) and HeroFiber™ which suppresses your appetite.  Just one gram of HeroFiber™ contains the benefits found in nine grams of ordinary fiber.  There are so many ways to create healthy and tasty choices with Smart for Life® Cookie Diet products.

Smart for Life® Cookie Diet also has a way to introduce kids to healthy, tasty, quick and easy choices instead of fast food and poor nutrition.  Many fast foods are made with unhealthy ingredients such as preservatives, pesticides and toxins, not to mention sugar and high fructose corn syrup.  ThinAdventure™ foods are made with natural and organic ingredients.  ThinAdventure™ foods are healthy snacks or meal replacements that the whole family can enjoy.  ThinAdventure™ is very kid-friendly because it also includes a variety of choices including cupcakes, cookies, shakes and hot cocoa.  To motivate kids on their journey, ThinAdventure™ has created an interactive children’s website packed with information, nutrition related games, recipes and more.  It teaches children about such topics as exercise, protein portions and what they should be eating to maintain their weight and proper health.

In addition to the Smart for Life® Cookie Diet and ThinAdventure™ healthy meal plans, you can now enjoy underWAY™, the first true appetite suppressant supplement drink.  It is available in four nutritious and delicious flavors – Acai Pomegranate, Grape, Green Tea and Orange.  underWAY™ not only suppresses your appetite naturally and quenches your thirst but it is filled with HeroFiber™.  HeroFiber™ is the same ingredient used in many of Smart for Life®’s other diet products.  One bottle of underWAY™ delivers the equivalent of 9 grams of fiber in only 20 calories.  It contains no preservatives, no sodium and no caffeine.  underWAY is another line of attack in the Smart for Life® Cookie Diet arsenal in the war against fat. Don’t Spend The Holiday’s in the Emergency Room

Emergency RoomIf you are overweight, you are at risk of spending your holidays in the emergency room.

Many people who overindulge during the holidays get the following symptoms:

Chest pain:  You will never know if it is a heart attack until you go to the ER for an EKG and blood work.  But you will spend at least 12 hours at the ER worrying about whether you are dying or not.  And don’t forget, the family at home who will stop celebrating and start worrying.

Abdominal pain:  It could be gallstones–another common reason for ER visits.  You will spend 4 to 6 hours waiting for blood work and an ultrasound.  If you do have gallstones, you will be enjoying a side of surgery with your Thanksgiving turkey.

Gout:  Also known as a dreaded, painful disease.  If you are lucky, you will spend just 2 to 3 hours getting a prescription for medication. The pain will surely ruin your appetite for any desserts for at least a day or two.

When I worked at the ER, the holidays always brought these kinds of cases in.  I remember one case where a 40-year old, overweight man came in with his wife because he was suffering from chest pain.  It ended up just being gas, but it surely destroyed their holiday.  The amazing part was that his older brother was having the dessert in the waiting room!  The brother also developed chest pain and ended up having a real heart attack.  Thankfully it was mild and he survived.  Are these the memories you want to remember for your family holidays?

Keep in mind that a big meal requires a lot of blood to be diverted to your intestinal system for digestion.  This puts stress on your heart, which substantially increases the risk of a heart attack.

Take home message – if you do not want a side of ER with your holiday dinner, follow these simple guidelines:

 1)    Eat a small amount of food; stop when you are no longer hungry.

 2)    Teach yourself self-discipline and do not overeat the one food you really enjoy.

 3)    Do not drink more than 2 alcoholic drinks.

 4)    Eat slowly over time and drink lots of water

 5)    If you are overweight, you are at risk.  Be extra careful.

 6)    Learn to say “NO, THANK YOU.”

 7)    Instead of lounging on the couch, get the family active with a walk around the block, a game of catch or even charades to keep the body moving.

Have a great holiday, enjoy your families and make memories you want to have for years to come.

Smart Weight Loss Advice

weight loss dietMunching on cookies is usually not the advice you get when you want to drop a few pounds, but that’s the approach taken at Smart for Life Weight Management Centers.

We’re not talking about Chips Ahoy here. Dieters are put on a regimen of nutritionally balanced meal replacement products, the most popular of which is the Smart Cookie, which comes in chocolate, chocolate raspberry, cinnamon, oatmeal raisin, pińa colada, banana, and… pizza flavors. Made with all natural and organic ingredients.

Patients eat six cookies per day — or a combination of other Smart for Life products, such as specially prepared shakes, muffins and soups — and have a high protein, low fat supper in the evening.

“The cookies train your body to eat small multiple meals throughout the day” says Tina Di Salvia, director of the two Smart for Life centers on the island.

“But the important part that people have to remember is that you will not be hungry whatsoever with these cookies. You have a cookie and a glass of water. The combination of both, with the protein, the fibre, the amino acids [in the cookie], and the water, fills you up.”

The physician-monitored program emphasizes a one-on-one approach and Smart for Life patients lose an average of 12 to 15 pounds every four weeks.

Mix 96 radio host Cat Spencer took the Smart for Life weight loss challenge and, since September, has lost 28 pounds “and counting” on his 6’4” frame.

“The day before I started I was very nervous and thought about backing out because I love food and thought it was going to be impossible to change my ways,” says Spencer.

The experience was easier than expected, and Spencer says it shed light on some his bad eating habits. “I now really do believe I had some sort of sugar addiction. I loved sweets and snacking, but within two days of starting the program I lost all cravings for anything sweet.” he says.

Assistant investment advisor Annie Koutrakis learned the hard way that the trickiest part of losing weight is keeping the bad calorie-laden habits at bay. She joined the Smart for Life program three years ago but, like many a dieter, managed to lose the weight only to gain it all back in the coming years.

“I had good results, but unfortunately I didn’t follow their suggestions in their maintenance plan, so I found myself a few years later having put on all the weight. In February I decided to go back.”

Forty pounds lighter these days, Koutrakis is now in the second month of her three-month maintenance plan, and is learning what her food boundaries are.

“[The first time around], I didn’t watch my portions. I didn’t watch my carbs. I have a problem with carbohydrates. I have to know that I can never have a plate of pasta as my main meal. It has to be a quarter of the plate.”

“Patients who follow the maintenance program will keep their weight off” says Tina. “Consumers Choice Award 2007”.

Smart for Life has two locations on the island of Montreal: 5180 Queen Mary Rd., suite 410, tel. 514-489-8840; and in Pierrefonds on 4877 St. Charles Blvd., tel. 514-626-1555.

40 centers across the United States & Canada.
